#24 Softball Splits Doubleheader against Holy Family

PHILADELPHIA, Pa.- Senior pitcher Amber Padilla (Chino, CA) tossed a gem in the opener as the #24 Caldwell University softball team split a doubleheader against Holy Family University in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference action. Caldwell took the opener 10-2 in five innings, while fell in the nightcap 8-2.

The Cougars move to 14-10 overall and 9-3 in the CACC, while the Tigers stand at 11-14 and 5-6 in conference play.

In the opener, Padilla (8-2) tossed a two-hitter over 4 1/3 innings, striking out two en-route to the five inning victory. Senior Megan Fryday (San Marcos, CA) blasted a two-run homerun in the second inning to get the Cougars on the board. Caldwell added four in the fourth and four in the fifth inning as they took the opener.

In the fourth, senior Caitlin McCready (Jupiter, FL) doubled in a pair as a third run scored on an error, while senior Brielle Reighn (Runnemeade, NJ) hit a sacrifice fly to extend the Cougar lead to 6-0. Holy Family got a run back in the fourth but Caldwell tacked on four in the fifth. The Cougars loaded the bases with one out as junior Lauren Frye (Jupiter, FL) drew a walk to force in a run, while junior Amy Hickman (Jackson, NJ) singled home a run. Reighn came through with a key hit as she doubled in a pair of runs to help the Cougars take the opener.

In the nightcap, Caldwell jumped out to an early lead as Reighn doubled in Hickman for a 1-0 lead.  Sophomore Marisa Monasseri (Monroe, NJ) drove in Reighn with a ground out as the Cougars lead 2-0 after one inning of play.

The Tigers tied the game in the second with a pair of runs and took the lead with a run in the third. Holy Family added four in the fourth and one in the fifth inning as they took the nightcap to earn a split.

Junior pitcher Sydney Ponto (West Deptford, NJ) tossed 4 2/3 innings, allowing eight runs (seven earned) on eight hits, while striking out three to fall to 5-7 on the season.

The Cougars travel to American International College University for a non-conference doubleheader on Tuesday, April 5 at 2:00 pm.
