Men’s Basketball Wraps up Season with Loss to Felician

RUTHERFORD, N.J.- Senior Billy McDonald (North Haven, CT) scored 20 points in his career finale as the Caldwell University men's basketball team ended their season with an 85-75 loss to Felician University in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference game.
 
The Cougars finish their season at 9-17 overall and 7-12 in the CACC, while the Golden Falcons end their season at 10-16 and 7-12 in conference play.
 
Caldwell led early in the game at 10-7 at the 13:49 mark of the first half. Felician took the lead late in the half at 22-13 with 7:12 remaining in the half. The Cougars battled back as McDonald netted five of the team's eight points to close the gap to 22-21 at the 4:41 mark. The Golden Falcons answered as they extended their lead to 36-27 at halftime.
 
The Cougars got off to a fast start in the second half as they scored the first 13 points to take a four point lead.  Senior Dawan Lighty (Paterson, NJ) drained two triples and added a jumper, while senior Salvatore Vitello (Bridgewater, NJ) netted a tripled and McDonald added a jumper to help the Cougars take a 40-36 lead with 15:40 left in the game.
 
Felician rallied back as they scored 11 unanswered points to retake the lead at 47-40 with 12:19 remaining in the game. Caldwell battled back with an 11-4 run to pull even at the 8:02 mark. Freshman Ahmad Harrison (Newark, NJ) netted four points in the run, while senior Brian Kenny (Howell, NJ) drained a triple to pull the Cougars even at 51.
 
The Golden Falcons retook the lead but the Cougars kept the score close down the stretch. The Cougars got as close as four points at 76-72 with 42 seconds left following a pair of Lighty free throws. Felician connected on nine free throws in the final minute to hold off the Cougars rally.
 
For the Cougars, McDonald led the way with 20 points and two assists, while Lighty netted 19 points. Kenny totaled 13 points and four boards, while Vitello finished with seven points, three rebounds and six assists. Senior Vin O'Beirne (Wood-Ridge, NJ) posted four points and seven rebounds.
 
The five seniors ended their Cougar career in Kenny, Lighty, McDonald, O'Beirne and Vitello on Tuesday night. Lighty finished his career in the top-10 all-time in school history in scoring with 1,304 points along with 166 triples. McDonald also topped 1,000 points this season and ended his career in a Cougar uniform with 1,094 points.
