Men’s Soccer Loses Heartbreaker in Overtime to Post in CACC Semifinals

LAKEWOOD, N.J.- Sophomore Joaquin Escudero (San Sebastian, Spain) netted a late goal for the Cougars but the Caldwell University men's soccer team came up short in a heartbreaker, falling 4-3 to Post University in the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Championship Semifinals on Saturday.

The Cougars finish their season at 8-8-3 overall, while the Eagles improve to 7-8-4 and advance to Sunday's championship game, and 4-3-4 in conference play.

Caldwell struck early in the first half as freshman Darren Appanah (Enfield, England) took a penalty kick in the 19th minute. While the penalty shot was saved, the rebound deflected back to Appanah, who chipped it past the keeper to give the Cougars the lead.

The Cougars dominated the first half shots 9-3 as Caldwell maintained a 1-0 lead into the halftime break.

Post pressed their offensive to start the second half and pulled even in the 57th minute as they tied the game a 1-1. The Cougars answered less than two minutes later as freshman Stefan Arnshed (Trelleborg, Sweden) scored off a defensive rebound to put Caldwell back in front 2-1.

Caldwell stretched their lead to 3-1 as Escudero dribbled in on the left side and scored to the opposite side to push the Cougars out to a two goal lead.

The Eagles rallied as they scored 26 seconds later to pull to within 3-2. Post netted the equalizer with 1:52 left in regulation as the game headed to overtime.

In the extra period, Post netted the game-winner at the 3:58 mark in the first overtime as they advanced to the CACC Championship game.

Junior goal keeper Fritz Meister (Flaach, Switzerland) posted three saves in the match.
