Men’s Basketball Earns First Win of the Season in OT against Roberts Wesleyan

AMHERST, N.Y.- Caldwell University men's basketball freshman Zay Jennings (Allentown, Pa.) set a Daemen College Tournament record with six triples as the Cougars picked up their first win of the season 85-80 in overtime against Roberts Wesleyan College.
 
The Cougars even their record at 1-1 on the season, while the RedHawks fall to 0-2.
 
The teams played a highly competitive game that could not be decided in 40 minutes of regulation. The Cougars tied the game late in the second half to force an extra period.
 
The first half featured four tied and five lead changes as Caldwell raced out to a 10-7 lead. The RedBirds rallied as they took the lead and from there the teams traded leads over most of the opening half.
 
Roberts Wesleyan built their largest lead of the game at 32-25 with 3:17 left in the first half but the Cougars chipped away and trailed 38-34 at the break.
 
The teams trades leads early in the second half but Roberts Wesleyan kept the Cougars at bay over the final nine minutes as they held a slim advantage. Caldwell rallied late as they connected on their free throws, while the RedBirds struggled from the line.
 
Over the final 1:11, Roberts Wesleyan went 2-for-4 from the line, while senior Austin Woods (Milford, Conn.) and freshman Vaughn Covington (Sicklerville, N.J.) each knocked down a pair from the charity stripe. Covington's were clutch as they came with three seconds left in regulation to even the score at 74 and force overtime.
 
In the extra period. Caldwell took control early as Jennings and freshman Daan Vianen (Nieuwegein, Netherlands) each drained a triple to go up by six points. Roberts Wesleyan battled back as they tied the score at 80 with 1:54 on the clock. Covington put the Cougars back in the driver's seat as he connected on a key triple and added a pair of free throws with seven seconds left to seal Caldwell's first victory of the season.
 
In the win, Jennings set the tournament record with six triples as he shot 6-for-14 from downtown. He finished with 24 points and four rebounds. Covington earned all-tournament honors as he tallied 20 points with three triples, along with five rebounds and six assists. Freshman Ruud Lutterman (Dalern, Netherlands) chipped in 15 points and four rebounds, while Wood totaled six rebounds. Freshman Eric Johnson-Alford (Clifton, N.J.) grabbed a team-high nine rebounds for the Cougars.
 
The Cougars open Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference play as they travel to Felician University on Wednesday, November 16 at 8 pm.
