SYRACUSE, N.Y.- Caldwell University junior
Kristen Drogsler (Middle Village, N.Y.) dropped in 24 points to carry the women's basketball team to an 84-75 victory against Le Moyne College in their season opener.
The Cougars improve to 1-0 on the season, while the Dolphins fall to 0-1.
Caldwell came out firing from the opening tip as senior
Antoinette Pilla (Scarsdale, N.Y.) drained a pair of early three-pointers, while Drogsler added one in the first four minute to put the Cougars ahead 11-7. Pilla had the hot shooting touch in the opening wuarter as she shot 4-for-5 from downtown in the first 10 minutes as Caldwell built a 24-14 lead.
Drogsler and Pilla each connected on a triple early in the second quarter to push the Cougar lead to 15 points. Le Moyne chipped away with 15-2 run in the middle of the quarter as they closed the gap to two points. Drogsler hit a pair at the free throw line, while junior
Sharell Sanders (Dorchester, Mass.) scooped in a lay-up as Caldwell took a 45-39 lead at halftime.
Le Moyne opened the second half with a 9-4 run to cut the score down to one point at 49-48. The Cougars extended back to seven points but Le Moyne kept it close as they pulled back to within three points at 58-55 with 1:56 left in the third quarter.
Caldwell pulled away with a 19-5 that stretched late into the fourth quarter as they pushed their lead into double digits. Drogsler totaled five points with a trifecta, while Pilla and sophomore
Andie Lennon (Secaucus, N.J.) each tallied a three-pointer in the run.
In the win, Drogsler shot 4-for-7 from downtown, finishing with 24 points, five assists, four rebounds and two steals. Pilla drained 6-of-12 from behind the arc as she tallied 23 points, four boards and two assists. Lennon netted 10 points, seven rebounds, and seven assists, while Sanders totaled 10 points, three rebounds and two steals. Junior
Karlie O'Driscoll (Sharon, Mass.) recorded eight points and four rebounds.
The Cougars wrap up play at the Le Moyne Tournament as they face The College of Saint Rose at 1 pm.
