CALDWELL, N.J.- Sophomore
Kristen Drogsler (Middle Village, NY) set new career-high in points and rebounds as the Caldwell University women's basketball team defeated the Wilmington University Wildcats 93-85 in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference play. Drogsler dropped in 38 points and 10 boards to pace the Cougars' offensive attack on Saturday afternoon.
The Cougars maintain their hold on second place in the CACC North Division as they improve to 10-6 overall and 6-2 in the conference. The Wildcats fall to 7-9 and 2-5 in the CACC.
Wilmington scored the first four points of the game but the Cougars responded with seven unanswered points. Junior
Antoinette Pilla (Scarsdale, NY) netted a triple, while sophomores
Karlie O'Driscoll (Sharon, MA) and
Sharell Sanders (Dorchester, MA) added buckets to go up 7-4. The Wildcats pulled even at 12-12 and 14-14 near the midway point of the opening quarter.
Drogsler helped the Cougars build an 11 point lead late in the quarter with seven points over the final four minutes. Pilla and freshman
Andie Lennon (Secaucus, NJ) added threes as Caldwell pulled ahead 29-18 with under a minute to play in the first quarter.
Caldwell added to their lead early in the second quarter as they extended to a 36-24 lead at the 7:12 mark. The Wildcats rallied as they closed to within a point at 40-39 with 1:58 left in the half. Drogsler netted a pair of free throws and a lay-up just before the buzzer to put the Cougars up 44-39 at halftime.
Wilmington scored the first four points of the second half to trim the score to 44-43 in the first two minutes of play. Drogsler drained a triple to put Caldwell back in front by four points. The Cougars were able to control the pace of play throughout most of the second half as the Wildcats got as close as two points five times the rest of the way. Caldwell iced the game at the free throw line in the final 39 seconds as Pilla, Sanders and Drogsler each connected on two free throws down the stretch.
For the Cougars, Drogsler set new career-best with 38 points, 10 rebounds and four blocks, while adding three steals. O'Driscoll also posted a double-double with 17 points and 11 boards, while Lennon chipped in 11 points and three assists. Pilla shot 3-for-4 from downtown, finishing with 14 points and four assists.
The Cougars continue their home stand as they host Philadelphia University in a CACC matchup on Monday, January 11 at 5 pm at the Newman Center.
