Adelphi Tops Cougars at NCAA Softball Regional, 7-3

GARDEN CITY, N.Y. – The Caldwell University softball team lost to Adelphi University, 7-3 at the NCAA Division II East Region Tournament Saturday afternoon at Adelphi's Janet L. Ficke Field. The Cougars, seeded first overall in the region, fall to 35-13-1 and will face Wilmington in an elimination game on Sunday, May 10.

Three straight singles to lead off the top of the first inning allowed Adelphi (27-19) to take an early 1-0 lead. Caldwell knotted the score at 1-1 in the bottom of the third inning, when junior Caitlin McCready (Jupiter, FL/Dwyer) came home from third on a wild pitch. In the top of the fifth, the Panthers scored three times to take a 4-1 advantage. Then in the bottom of the fifth, the Cougars scored twice, including a bases-loaded walk by sophomore Lauren Frye (Jupiter, FL/Jupiter), that made the score 4-3. But Caldwell let a golden opportunity go by when they left the bases loaded. Megan Lewis hit a solo home run in the sixth and the Panthers scored two more runs in the seventh to close out the win.

Junior pitcher Amber Padilla (Chino, CA/Pomona Catholic) started and allowed five runs, four earned, on eight hits over five innings of work. Senior Alyssa Calderon (Fontana, CA/Etiwanda) led the Cougar offense with two hits. Jasmine Ennabe held Caldwell to one hit over three innings of relief to earn the win.

The Cougars will face fifth-seeded Wilmington on Sunday, May 10 in an elimination game at 10:00 a.m.
