LAKEWOOD, N.J. – A three-run home run by senior
Alyssa Calderon (Fontana, CA/Etiwanda) led the Caldwell University softball team past Wilmington University, 4-3 at the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Tournament Friday afternoon at the GCU Softball Complex. The Cougars (33-12-1) will play Dominican College for the CACC championship on Saturday, May 2 at 12:00 p.m.
Wilmington (33-15) struck first with three runs in the top of the first inning, including a two-run double by Colby Watts. Caldwell responded in the third inning. Junior
Brielle Reighn (Runnemeade, NJ/Triton Reg.) hit a one-out single that plated senior
Kristen Knorr (Monroeville, NJ/Delsea) for the Cougars' first run of the game. With Reighn on first and junior
Caitlin McCready (Jupiter, FL/Dwyer) on second, Calderon blasted a three-run homer down the left field line to put the Cougars on top, 4-3. It was the sixth home run of the season for Calderon, who ranks second on Caldwell's all-time home run list with 24.
After allowing three hits and a walk in the first inning, junior pitcher
Amber Padilla (Chino, CA/Pomona Catholic) held the Wildcats to just three hits and four base runners over the final six innings to close out the win. Padilla struck out four and walked one in seven innings to improve to 17-5 on the season. Calderon and freshman
Kortney Craker (San Marcos, CA/Mission Hills) had two hits in the win.
The Cougars, who won the CACC regular-season title this season, will play second-seeded Dominican College on Saturday, May 2 for the CACC Tournament championship. The game starts at 12:00 p.m. If Dominican wins, there will be a second game between the two teams.
