Caldwell Baseball Ends Season with 11-Inning Loss to Bloomfield

NEWARK, N.J. – The Caldwell University baseball team completed the 2015 season with a 4-3 loss to Bloomfield College in 11 innings Thursday afternoon at Newark Bears Stadium. The Cougars end the year with an 11-27 record, while the Bears are 7-29.

Senior Anthony Caruso (N. Babylon, NY/N. Babylon) and sophomore Ryan Rivera (Saddle Brook, NJ/St. Joseph) drove in runs in the top of the third inning to give Caldwell a 2-0 lead. In the top of the fourth, freshman Paul Marinello (Freehold, NJ/Colts Neck) doubled home junior Mike LaTorraca (West Caldwell, NJ/James Caldwell) for a 3-0 advantage. Bloomfield scored a run in the bottom of the fifth and received a two-run single by Harry Montero in the seventh to tie the score at 3-3. The game remained knotted until the bottom of the 11th inning, when Shadi Azar led off with a home run to end the game.

Caruso and freshman William Levier (Monroe Twp., NJ/Monroe Twp.) each had two hits in the loss. Freshman Joshua Caba (Belleville, NJ/Belleville) started and held the Bears scoreless while allowing two hits and a walk with three strikeouts in three innings of work.

The game also marked the final contest for seniors Caruso, Eric Bomenblit (Allenwood, NJ/Wall), Robert Humes (Berlin, NJ/Winslow Twp.), Ryan Langdon (Wantagh, NY/Wantagh), Dominick Mangarella (East Brunswick, NJ/Bishop Ahr), Joseph Saverino (Bronx, NY/Fordham Prep), Michael Sheridan (Caldwell, NJ/Seton Hall Prep) and Lucas Willenbrock (Amityville, NY/Amityville Memorial).
