CALDWELL, N.J. - The Caldwell University softball team won both games of a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference twinbill, 6-4 and 10-2 in six innings Thursday afternoon at Caldwell Field. The Cougars, who have not lost in 15 straight games, improve to 20-9-1 overall and 14-1 in the conference. The Lady Chargers are now 21-15, 13-5 CACC.
In the first game, Dominican jumped out to a 3-0 lead with three runs in the top of the first inning. Caldwell responded with four runs in the bottom of the second, with freshman
Kortney Craker (San Marcos, CA/Mission Hills) leading off with a solo home run. It was Craker's fourth of the season and third in the last three games. Senior
Kristen Knorr (Monroeville, NJ/Delsea) hit a double that scored sophomore
Amy Hickman (Jackson, NJ/Jackson Memorial), with junior
Brielle Reighn (Runnemeade, NJ/Triton Reg.) and senior
Alyssa Calderon (Fontana, CA/Etiwanda) delivering RBI singles. After the Lady Chargers pulled even with a run in the top of the third, a double by Craker that plated sophomore
Gracie Sullivan (Elmhurst, IL/York) in the fourth put the Cougars back on top, 5-4. Calderon led off the sixth with a home run, her fifth of the season, for a 6-4 lead.
Junior pitcher
Amber Padilla (Chino, CA/Pomona Catholic) went the distance, allowing four runs, one earned, on eight hits while fanning six and walking two. Calderon and Knorr each went 3-for-4 at the plate, while Craker and Reighn recorded two hits apiece.
Game 2 started much the same as the first one, with Dominican taking the early lead with two runs in the top of the first. A double by Calderon in the bottom of the first brought home junior
Caitlin McCready (Jupier, FL/Dwyer) to make the score 2-1 Lady Chargers. In the bottom of the second, sophomore
Lauren Frye (Jupiter, FL/Jupiter) belted a three-run home run to put the Cougars ahead, 4-2. Three more runs in the third, including RBIs from freshmen
Marisa Monasseri (Monroe, NJ/Monroe Twp.) and
Kiahna Silva (Etiwanda, CA/Etiwanda) made the score 7-2. After Knorr came home on a double by Reighn in the fourth, Craker and junior
Katelyn Biasi (Blackwood, NJ/Sterling) drove in runs in the sixth to end the game.
Sophomore
Sydney Ponto (West Deptford, NJ/West Deptford) settled in after the first inning, blanking Dominican on just one hit the rest of the way to improve to 7-4. Calderon, Craker and Monasseri had two hits apiece for Caldwell.
The Cougars play a CACC doubleheader at Concordia College on Friday, Apr. 17, beginning at 3:00 p.m. in Bronxville, N.Y
