LITTLE FALLS, N.J. – The Caldwell University baseball team split a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference doubleheader with Bloomfield College, losing 4-1 and winning 13-5 Thursday afternoon at Yogi Berra Stadium. The results give the Cougars an 8-21 record on the season, including a 5-9 mark in league play. The Bears are now 4-23, 2-12 CACC.
Bloomfield took control of Game 1 with three runs in the bottom of the first inning, including two on a double by Juan Hilario. Sophomore
Ryan Rivera (Saddle Brook, NJ/St. Joseph) singled home freshman
William Levier (Monroe Twp., NJ/Monroe Twp.) in the top of the fifth. But the Bears got the run back in the bottom of the fifth to restore their three-run lead. The Cougars managed just one hit the rest of the way, as the Bears defeated Caldwell for the third time this season.
Levier had two of the Cougars' five hits off Bloomfield starter Francisco Scudiero, who allowed one run while striking out nine and walking two in eight innings. Senior
Lucas Willenbrock (Amityville, NY/Amityville Memorial) pitched three scoreless innings in relief of senior
Michael Sheridan (Caldwell, NJ/Seton Hall Prep), who gave up four runs, two earned, on eight hits in five innings.
In the second game, Caldwell struck in the top of the first inning, as freshman
Paul Marinello (Freehold, NJ/Colts Neck) came home on a grounder by sophomore
Michael Bernstein (Staten Island, NY/Susan Wagner). After the Bears tied the score with a run in the bottom of the first, freshman
Kevin Goldman (Valley Stream, NY/Valley Stream Central) singled home Levier for a 2-1 lead. Then in the third, the Cougars loaded the bases for Bernstein, whose sacrifice fly brought home freshman
Charles Grade (Sterling Heights, MI/Sterling Heights). Senior
Anthony Caruso (N. Babylon, NY/N. Babylon) followed with a three-run homer, his second of the season, to put Caldwell ahead, 6-1.
Caruso also had an RBI double in the fifth following a Bloomfield run in the fourth for a 7-2 advantage. After Levier singled home Caruso in the top of the seventh, the Bears scored a pair of unearned runs in the bottom of the seventh. Then in the eighth, Marinello came home on a wild pitch, and Goldman hit a grand slam, his first collegiate home run, for a 13-4 lead.
Goldman finished with five RBIs, while Caruso drove in four runs. Goldman, Caruso and Levier each recorded two hits. Sophomore pitcher
Joshua Caba (Belleville, NJ/Belleville) started and gave up four runs, two earned, on five hits over six innings to earn his first career win. Senior
