ORANGEBURG, N.Y. – The Caldwell University baseball team lost a pair of one-run games to Dominican College, 2-1 and 4-3 in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference doubleheader Tuesday at Veterans Memorial Park. The results leave the Cougars at 6-20 overall and 4-8 in league play, while the Chargers improve to 10-14, 7-5 CACC.
In Game 1, Dominican scored a run in the first and another in the third to lead 2-0. Caldwell loaded the bases with nobody out in the top of the third but was unable to score. Then in the fourth, junior
Dominick Orlando (Manalapan, NJ/Holmdel) led off with a double but was injured on the play. Junior
Mike LaTorraca (Caldwell, NJ/James Caldwell) ran for Orlando and advanced to third on a passed ball. Freshman
Kevin Goldman (Valley Stream, NY/Valley Stream Central) followed with a sacrifice fly that scored LaTorraca. But the Cougars were unable to generate any offense after the fourth, as the Chargers held on to win, 2-1.
Junior
Jon Gribbin (Westfield, NJ/Westfield) started and pitched well, allowing two runs on seven hits over 6 2/3 innings. James Taunton held Caldwell to an unearned run on three hits in seven innings of work for Dominican.
The Chargers took an early lead in Game 2, scoring twice in the bottom of the third inning. A single by freshman
Paul Marinello (Freehold, NJ/Colts Neck) in the top of the fifth brought home sophomore
Ryan Rivera (Saddle Brook, NJ/St. Joseph) for Caldwell's first run. After Dominican scored a run in the bottom of the fifth, Goldman singled to score sophomore
Michael Bernstein (Staten Island, NY/Susan Wagner) from second base in the sixth to make the score 3-2 Chargers.
Then in the top of the eighth, Goldman led off with a double, moved to second on a bunt by freshman
Charles Grade (Sterling Heights, MI/Sterling Heights) and scored the tying run on a single from freshman
William Levier (Monroe Twp., NJ/Monroe Twp.). After the two teams failed to score in their next at-bats, Dominican loaded the bases in the bottom of the ninth on two singles and a walk. Robert Alonso followed with a single to right field to bring home the game-winning run.
Goldman went 3-for-4 at the plate, while Rivera, Marinello and Bernstein had two hits, as the Cougars registered 12 hits as a team. Freshman pitcher
Christopher Cerf (Ramsey, NJ/Ramsey) started and gave up three runs, two earned, on six hits in six innings.
Caldwell hosts Mercy College in a non-conference game on Wednesday, Apr. 15, beginning at 3:00 p.m. at the Kiwanis Oval.
