CALDWELL, N.J. - The Caldwell University softball team earned a pair of victories over USciences, 10-0 in five innings and 8-2 in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference doubleheader Saturday afternoon at Caldwell Field. The Cougars have won seven straight to improve to 13-9 overall and 7-1 in the conference, while the Devils fall to 7-19, 5-9 CACC.
In the first game, Caldwell scored three runs in the second inning, three more in the third and four runs in the fourth for a 10-0 victory. Sophomore
Lauren Frye (Jupiter, FL/Jupiter) hit a two-run single in the second and came home on a double by senior
Kristen Knorr (Monroeville, NJ/Delsea). In the third, freshman
Kortney Craker (San Marcos, CA/Mission Hills) singled to score junior
Brielle Reighn (Runnemeade, NJ/Triton Reg.), and later scored on a two-run triple by freshman
Kiahna Silva (Etiwanda, CA/Etiwanda). Silva also hit a two-run single in the fourth, while Reighn and Craker also drove in runs in the fourth.
Junior
Amber Padilla (Chino, CA/Pomona Catholic) pitched another strong game, blanking USciences on two hits while striking out three without a walk in four innings. Senior
Sarah Almasy (Stratford, NJ/Sterling) pitched a perfect fifth inning in relief. Craker and Knorr each went 3-for-3, while Silva had two hits and four RBIs.
Caldwell started the second game well, scoring three runs in the third and four in the fourth. Knorr, Reighn and freshman
Marisa Monasseri (Monroe Twp., NJ/Monroe) each drove in runs in the third. Frye hit a two-run double in the fourth and scored on a single by junior
Caitlin McCready (Jupier, FL/Dwyer). Still in the fourth, senior
Alyssa Calderon (Fontana, CA/Etiwanda) singled to score McCready for a 7-0 lead. Britt Granahan hit a two-run homer in the sixth for the Devils' only runs of the day. Junior
Katelyn Biasi (Blackwood, NJ/Sterling) completed the scoring with a single that plated Knorr in the bottom of the sixth.
Knorr, Reighn and Frye each had two hits in the second game. Sophomore pitcher
Sydney Ponto (West Deptford, NJ/West Deptford) started and gave up just three hits while walking two and striking out eight in five innings.
The Cougars host Holy Family University in another CACC doubleheader on Sunday, Apr. 12. The first pitch is set for 12:00 p.m. at Caldwell Field.
