Caldwell Softball Splits at Post in CACC Opener

WATERBURY, Conn. – The Caldwell University softball team began the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference schedule with a split with Post University Wednesday afternoon at Lamoy Field. The Cougars are now 7-9 overall and 1-1 in league play, while the Eagles are 10-10, 4-2 CACC.

Trailing 1-0 in the first game, Caldwell tied the score on a double by junior Brielle Reighn (Runnemeade, NJ/Triton Reg.) that scored senior Kristen Knorr (Monroeville, NJ/Delsea) in the third inning. Post scored the go-ahead run in the bottom of the fifth, then held the Cougars scoreless over the final two innings to close out the win.

Junior pitcher Amber Padilla (Chino, CA/Pomona Catholic) gave up two runs on nine hits over seven innings. Post's Kaitlin Derby limited Caldwell to an unearned run on two hits over five innings of work.

In Game 2, the Cougars exploded for five runs in the top of the first to take control of the game. Freshman Kortney Craker (San Marcos, CA/Mission Hills) hit a two-out, bases-loaded double for a 3-0 lead. Freshman Kiahna Silva (Etiwanda, CA/Etiwanda) plated Craker with a single, then came home on a single by sophomore Lauren Frye (Jupiter, FL/Jupiter) for a 5-0 lead. Post answered with two runs in the bottom of the first and scored two runs in the bottom of the seventh. With one out and the bases loaded, senior pitcher Sarah Almasy (Stratford, NJ/Sterling) induced two pop-ups to end the game.

Craker and junior Caitlin McCready (Jupiter, FL/Dwyer) each had two hits for Caldwell. Sophomore pitcher Sydney Ponto (West Deptford, NJ/West Deptford) allowed four runs, two earned, on six hits over 6 1/3 innings for the win, while Almasy earned the save.
