Caldwell Softball Beats Pace, 10-2 in Six Innings

BRIARCLIFF, N.Y. – The Caldwell University softball team defeated Pace University, 10-2 in six innings in a non-conference game Wednesday afternoon at Pace Field. A doubleheader was originally scheduled but Game 2 was canceled due to rain. The Cougars are now 4-8 on the season, while the Setters drop to 9-3.

After allowing two runs in the top of the second, Caldwell pulled even in the third. A grounder by senior Kristen Knorr (Monroeville, NJ/Delsea) plated freshman Kortney Craker (San Marcos, CA/Mission Hills), and junior Brielle Reighn (Runnemeade, NJ/Triton Reg.) doubled home Knorr. Then in the fourth, the Cougars scored five runs, including a three-run double by Reighn, to take a 7-2 lead. On the play, Knorr scored the 177th run of her career, passing the previous school record of 176, set by former Caldwell All-American Kim Mahoney.

Knorr and junior Caitlin McCready (Jupiter, FL/Dwyer) both drew bases-loaded walks in the five-run fourth. Craker and Knorr drove in runs in the fifth, then sophomore Lauren Frye (Jupiter, FL/Jupiter) doubled in sophomore Gracie Sullivan (Elmhurst, IL/York) to end the game.

Reighn and Frye each had two hits, with Reighn driving in four runs. Junior pitcher Amber Padilla (Chino, CA/Pomona Catholic) gave up just one hit while allowing two runs, one earned, and striking out five in seven innings to improve to 4-2.

Caldwell is scheduled to play a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference doubleheader against Felician College on Thursday, Mar. 26 at Matera Field in Lyndhurst, N.J.
