Cougars Drop Two to St. Thomas in Florida

LANTANA, Fla. – The Caldwell University baseball team was swept by St. Thomas University, 15-5 and 13-0 in a non-conference doubleheader Wednesday at the Santaluces Sports Complex.

In the first game, Caldwell answered a pair of St. Thomas runs in the top of the first with two runs to tie the score. Freshman Kevin Goldman (Valley Stream, NY/Valley Stream Central) singled home sophomore Ryan Rivera (Saddle Brook, NJ/St. Joseph), then freshman Noah Clark (Toms River, NJ/Toms River East) plated junior Dominick Orlando (Manalapan, NJ/Holmdel) with a sacrifice fly. The Bobcats scored eight runs over the next five innings, with the Cougars scoring on a wild pitch in the third and an error in the fourth to make the score 10-4.

In the bottom of the seventh, senior Dominick Mangarella (East Brunswick, NJ/Bishop Ahr) hit a single that brought home freshman Paul Marinello (Freehold, NJ/Colts Neck) for the Cougars' final run. St. Thomas scored five runs in the top of the ninth to make the final score 15-5.

Rivera, Marinello, Mangarella and junior Mike LaTorraca (West Caldwell, NJ/James Caldwell) each had two hits for the Cougars.

The Bobcats' pitching held the Cougars to no runs on eight hits in a 13-0 shutout in Game 2. Orlando and freshman Richard Peteya (Bloomfield, NJ/Queen of Peace) had two hits apiece, as the Cougars failed to score for the first time this season. Senior right-hander Robert Humes (Berlin, NJ/Winslow Twp.) pitched two scoreless innings of relief.

Caldwell completes its Florida trip with a game against Florida Tech on Thursday, Mar. 19, beginning at 1:00 p.m.
