NEWARK, Del. – Senior forward
Emily Caswell (Wakefield, RI/Prout School) registered 32 points and 22 rebounds as the Caldwell University women's basketball team beat Wilmington University, 99-91 in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference game Saturday afternoon at the WU Athletics Complex. The win clinches at least a second-place finish in the CACC North Division for the Cougars, who are now 17-10 overall and 14-4 in league play. The Wildcats fall to 8-19, 6-13 CACC.
The CACC North title will come down to the final game of the regular season, as Caldwell hosts Bloomfield on Tuesday, Feb. 24. The Cougars trail Bloomfield (15-3 CACC) by one game and will earn the top seed in the North with a victory on Tuesday, having beaten the Bears on Dec. 3 in Bloomfield.
Wilmington led for most of the first half, opening the game with a 20-11 run. The lead was eight, 31-23 with 7:36 on the clock when Caldwell responded with a 13-4 run sparked by six points from sophomore guard
Antoinette Pilla (Scarsdale, NY/Ardsley) that put the Cougars up, 36-35 with under three minutes left. A pair of baskets by Caswell helped Caldwell close out the half with a 7-2 run to take a 46-43 advantage into halftime. Both teams shot the ball well, with the Cougars shooting 56.3 percent from the floor compared to 51.4 percent for the Wildcats. Caswell notched 19 points and 12 boards before halftime.
With Caldwell maintaining the lead into the second half, junior guard
Nicole Angelo (Mount Laurel, NJ/Camden Catholic) gave the Cougars some breathing room with 10 points, including two threes, over six possessions for a 76-62 lead at the 9:29 mark. Wilmington cut the deficit to six, 89-83 with three minutes left and came as close as five with under a minute to play. But Caswell and the Cougars were too much to overcome, as Caldwell won its sixth in a row.
The Cougars ended up shooting a season-high 54.8 percent from the field, marking the fourth straight game they have shot 49.0 percent or better. Caldwell also went to the line 32 times, making 24, compared to 11-of-14 for Wilmington.
Caswell shot 11of-18 from the field and 10-of-11 from the charity stripe while adding four steals. Her 22 rebounds matches her career high, set on Jan. 7 against Post earlier this season. Angelo had 15 points and Pilla finished with 14 points, while senior guard
Jessica Coscia (Staten Island, NY/Moore Catholic) dished out nine of Caldwell's 22 assists. Also contributing were junior forward
Lisa Rovatsos (Bayonne, NJ/Bayonne) with 11 points and freshman guard
Sharell Sanders (Dorchester, MA/St. Mary's) with 10 points and four assists. Tenicia Spence and Jasmine Lee each had 16 points to lead the Wildcats.
The Cougars wrap up the regular season with a home game against Bloomfield College that will determine the top seed in the CACC North. Game time is set for 6:00 p.m. in the George R. Newman Center.
