Lighty Nets 22 Points in Men’s Basketball Loss to Post

WATERBURY, Conn.- Senior Dawan Lighty (Paterson, NJ) netted 22 points as the Caldwell University men's basketball team fell to the Post University Eagles 82-70 in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference game.
 
The Cougars fall to 3-6 overall and 1-3 in the CACC, while the Eagles improve to 6-3 and 4-0 in conference play.
 
Post jumped out to a 22-11 lead at the 7:47 mark of the opening half. The Cougars rallied with a 14-4 run to pull within a point five minutes later. Senior Salvatore Vitello (Bridgewater, NJ) bookended the run with a jumper and a triple, while Lighty also added five points including one from downtown as Caldwell sliced the score down to 26-25 with 2:56 left in the half.
 
The Eagles scored the next four points but the Cougars netted a couple of late baskets to close the gap before halftime. Senior Billy McDonald (North Haven, CT) and Lighty both scored in the final 90 seconds of the half as the Cougars trailed 31-29 at the break.
 
Caldwell pulled even early in the second half as the teams traded runs over the next 10 minutes of play. Vitello drained a triple to tie the score at 34, while Lighty connected on a jumper. Senior Brian Kenny (Howell, NJ) connected on a pair of free throws at the 16:43 mark to put Caldwell in front by two at 38-36.
 
Post used a 14-3 run to retake the lead and push ahead by 10 points at 53-43 with 11:01 remaining in the game. Caldwell answered with an 11-3 run to battle back and cut their deficit down to two points. Lighty rained a pair from downtown as well as a pair of free throws, while Kenny also connected from long range to pull the Cougars back to within a point at 56-54 with 8:39 left in the game. The Eagles extended their lead to double digits and held the lead the rest of the way.
 
For the Cougars, Lighty led the way with 22 points, while adding four rebounds, three assists and three steals. Vitello finished with 10 points, five boards and four assists, while Kenny chipped in 12 points, six rebounds and three assists. McDonald tallied 13 points and seven boards.
 
The Cougars return home to the Newman Center this Saturday, December 12 as they host the Felician University Golden Falcons in a CACC clash at 3 pm.
