CALDWELL, N.J.- The Caldwell University women's basketball team shot 62% in the third quarter, scoring 26 points, as the Cougars surged past the Felician University Golden Falcons 73-51 in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference play.
The Cougars up their mark to 6-4 overall and 4-1 in the CACC, while the Golden Falcons drop to 1-8 and 1-3 in conference play.
Caldwell scored the first six points of the game on their way to taking a 10-4 lead late in the opening quarter. Felician pulled even at 10-10 and the teams traded points over the final two minutes as the score was tied at 17 after one quarter of play.
Felician took a 22-19 lead early in the second quarter but the Cougars ripped off the next nine points to retake the lead and push ahead by six points. Sophomore
Kristen Drogsler (Middle Village, NY) connected on a triple, while sophomore
Maura Kelty (Barrington, RI) added four points as Caldwell took a 28-22 lead with 5:35 left in the half. The Cougars added to their lead late as they led 32-25 at the break.
The Cougars pulled away to start the second half as they opened the third quarter on a 14-4 run to extend their lead to double digits. Senior
Nicole Angelo (Mount Laurel, NJ) drained a triple and sophomore
Karlie O'Driscoll (Sharon, MA) added four points, while sophomore
Sharell Sanders (Dorchester, MA) capped it with a three-pointer to put the Cougars up 46-29 at the 4:28 mark.
Caldwell continued their hot shooting in the quarter as they pushed ahead by 23 at 58-35 heading to the final quarter. The Cougars shot 62.5% to the Golden Falcons' 29.4% in the quarter to build a double-digit advantage. The Cougars maintained their lead to the final buzzer as Felician only got as close at 15 points over the final 10 minutes of play.
For the Cougars, Drogsler led the way with 14 points, nine rebounds and four assists, while O'Driscoll added 14 points and six boards. Angelo finished with 12 points and two assists, while Sanders tallied five points, four rebounds, four assists and tied a career-best with six steals. Antoinette Pilla (Scarsdale, NY) went 2-for-4 from long range, finishing with eight points.
The Cougars are back in action on Thursday, December 17 as they travel to Southern Connecticut St. University for a non-conference game at 7 pm.
