Caldwell Volleyball Splits at GCU Tourney

LAKEWOOD, N.J. – The Caldwell University volleyball team began the 2014 season at the Georgian Court Tournament, losing to Roberts Wesleyan College and defeating Southern New Hampshire Saturday afternoon at the GCU Wellness Center. The Cougars, who were 19-12 last season, lost in five sets to the Redhawks before sweeping the Penmen in three sets.

Against Roberts Wesley, Caldwell won the first two sets, 25-23 and 26-24, fending off two set points in the second set to take a 2-0 lead. But the Redhawks won the next two sets, 25-20 and 25-18 to force a fifth and deciding set. Roberts Wesleyan hit .296 in the final set compared to .065 for the Cougars to win the match. Senior Erica Harrell (Richardson, TX/Plano East), sophomore Rachael DiLeonardo (Cincinnati, OH/Mount Notre Dame) and freshman Taryn Auyong (Honolulu, HI/Kamehameha) led Caldwell with 12 kills apiece. Senior Athena Nestoras (Los Angeles, CA/St. Monica Catholic) delivered 38 assists, while senior libero Jaclyn Del Cid (Bogota, NJ/Bogota) had 11 digs.

In the day's second match, the Cougars held Southern New Hampshire to a .110 hitting percentage while hitting .260 to cruise to a 25-21, 25-19, 25-18 victory. Auyong registered 12 kills, 15 digs and three blocks for her first career double-double. Harrell added nine kills and a .381 hitting percentage. Defensively, Del Cid had 21 digs, DiLeonardo tallied 15 digs, and freshman Narae Wadsworth (Reno, NV/Wooster) notched four blocks.

The Cougars complete play at the Georgian Court Tournament with a match against Franklin Pierce University on Sunday, Sept. 7 at 2:00 p.m.
