Caldwell Volleyball Handles Felician in CACC Opener

Box Score
CALDWELL, N.J. – The Caldwell University volleyball team defeated Felician College in four sets to open Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference play Wednesday night in the George R. Newman Center. The Cougars, who won by scores of 25-12, 25-19, 24-26, 25-13, improve to 3-1 overall and 1-0 in conference play. The Golden Falcons fall to 0-3, 0-1 CACC.

Caldwell cruised in the first set, getting four kills apiece from freshmen Taryn Auyong (Honolulu, HI/Kamehameha) and Narae Wadsworth (Reno, NV/Wooster) while holding Felician to just three kills in the set. Auyong, who was named the CACC Rookie of the Week on Monday, added three kills in the second set, as the Cougars held off the Golden Falcons for a 25-19 win.

The third set remained close, with Caldwell eventually taking a 22-18 lead. But Felician fought back, scoring eight of the final 10 points to avoid the sweep and win the set, 26-24. Caldwell's defense took over in the fourth set, limiting Felician to a -.103 hitting percentage to take a comfortable 25-13 win. Auyong tallied four more kills, and senior Athena Nestoras (Los Angeles, CA/St. Monica) added three kills and five assists.

Auyong finished with a career-high 14 kills to go with nine digs, while Wadsworth had a career-best 11 kills. Nestoras and freshman Gabrielle Bennett (San Antonio, TX/Johnson) split the setting duties, delivering 18 and 23 assists, respectively. Senior libero Jaclyn Del Cid (Bogota, NJ/Bogota), last week's CACC Defensive Player of the Week, notched 25 digs, with Bennett adding 13 digs. Junior middle blocker Kelsey Blankerts (Sylvania, OH/Southview) helped out the defense with three total blocks. Felician was led by Sally Taylor with nine kills and 12 digs.
