Caldwell Lacrosse Begins Inaugural Season with Loss to Post

Box Score
WATERBURY, Conn. – The Caldwell College women's lacrosse team played its first game in the history of the program today, losing to Post University, 13-10 in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference game at Post. The Cougars, coached by Amy Rizzo, received four goals from freshman Courtney Donlon (East Brunswick, NJ/East Brunswick) and three goals apiece from freshmen Christina Gonzalez (Fairfax, VA/Chantilly) and Kirsten Whitt (Lawrenceville, GA/Mountain View).

The Cougars took the field for the first time with a roster of 15 players, including 12 freshmen. All 15 players were making their collegiate lacrosse debut, with Rizzo serving as a head college coach for the first time after being an assistant for four seasons.

After falling behind 2-0 in the first half, Caldwell answered with three straight goals to take a 3-0 lead. Gonzalez tallied the first goal in the program's history at the 16:47 mark of the first half. Donlon scored twice just 90 seconds apart for a 3-2 advantage with 14:22 on the clock. Post scored four goals in the final 12 minutes of the half to take a 6-5 lead at halftime.

In the second half, the Eagles tallied the first three goals to push the lead to 9-5. Whitt found the net twice, followed by Donlon's fourth goal to make the score 9-8 with 20 minutes remaining. The teams exchanged goals, with Whitt scoring her third goal of the game, but then Post tallied two more goals to lead 12-9 with 9:38 to play. The Cougars were able to come within two, 12-10 on Gonzalez's third goal of the game with 5:21 on the clock, but two saves by Post goalie Kathy Walker and two costly turnovers kept Caldwell from getting any closer.

Freshmen Amy Hudak (Jackson, NJ/Jackson Memorial) and Victoria Grzelak (Jackson, NJ/Jackson Memorial) each recorded an assist, while freshman goalie Melissa Garris (Matawan, NJ/Old Bridge) made four saves. Walker recorded 11 saves, as the Cougars out-shot the Eagles, 22-20. Shannon Young led Post with five goals.

Caldwell plays its first home game on Tuesday, Mar. 25 at Centennial Field in Verona, N.J. Game time is set for 12:00 p.m.
