PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – The Caldwell College men's basketball team lost to Holy Family University, 75-63 in the quarterfinals of the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Tournament Saturday afternoon at the Campus Center. The Cougars, seeded third in the North, are now 16-11 overall, while the Tigers (20-9) advance to the CACC semifinals next week.
Holy Family took control of the game early, building a 26-10 lead midway through the first half. The lead was still 16 points when Caldwell used five points from junior guard
Wyatt Polk (Haddonfield, NJ/Haddonfield) and four points from sophomore forward
Billy McDonald (North Haven, CT/North Haven) to close out the half with an 11-3 run that made the halftime score 37-29 Tigers. McDonald scored 10 points for the Cougars, while Holy Family made six threes in the first half compared to one for Caldwell.
Six more points from Polk over the first eight minutes of the second half helped the Cougars pull to within five, 43-38 with 12:14 remaining. But three-pointers by Turhan Griffin and Hunter Wysocki allowed the Tigers to extend their lead to 13, 53-40 with eight minutes left. Caldwell came within seven points twice but could not get any closer the rest of the way, as Holy Family moves on to the semifinals for the second year in a row.
Caldwell out-scored the Tigers in the paint, 40-14, but the hosts made 10 threes compared to two from beyond the arc for the Cougars. Polk led all scorers with 25 points to go with six rebounds, while McDonald had 13 points on 6-of-9 shooting from the field. Junior forward
Michael Balkovic (Neptune, NJ/St. John Vianney) added 10 points and eight boards, and junior guard
Kevin Walker (Bayonne, NJ/St. Peter's Prep) dished out seven assists. Griffin led the Tigers with 19 points.
