Philadelphia Tops Caldwell in Women’s Hoops

Box Score
CALDWELL, N.J. – In a match-up of division leaders, the Caldwell College women's basketball team fell to Philadelphia University, 91-80 in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference game Saturday afternoon at the George R. Newman Center. The Cougars, who entered the game atop the CACC North Division standings, are now 11-8 overall and 9-3 in league play. The Rams (13-5), who lead the CACC South, remain unbeaten in the CACC with a conference mark of 11-0.

Caldwell led 19-14 midway through the first half when Philadelphia reeled off 15 straight points, including eight from Alex Heck, to lead 29-19 with 6:44 left in the half. A three-pointer by Monica Schacker before the buzzer gave the Rams their largest lead of the period, 46-33 at the break. Heck and Schacker scored 11 points apiece for Philadelphia, while the Cougars received nine points each from senior forward Jeanette Anderson (Lynn, MA/Lynn) and freshman forward Alyssa James (Rosedale, NY/St. Mary's).

The lead grew to as many as 16 points before Caldwell used a 12-0 run to pull within four, 53-49 with 15 minutes to play. Anderson and junior forward Emily Caswell (Wakefield, RI/Prout School) had four points apiece. A conventional three-point play from junior guard Jessica Coscia (Staten Island, NY/Moore Catholic) and a basket from Anderson helped Caldwell cut the deficit to 59-56 with 12 minutes on the clock. But Philadelphia took control of the game with a 16-2 run over the next four minutes that made the score 77-58 with 7:35 remaining. The Cougars came as close as 10 points with 2:19 to play, but could not prevent the Rams from winning their 11th conference game without a loss.

Both teams shot the ball well in the second half, with Philadelphia making 61.3 percent from the field compared to 58.1 percent for Caldwell. The Rams hit 8-of-12 from three-point range and held a 37-29 edge in rebounding.

Anderson led Caldwell with 19 points and seven rebounds while making 9-of-14 from the floor. James scored a career-high 18 points to go with 11 rebounds and four blocks. Freshman guard Antoinette Pilla (Scarsdale, NY/Ardsley) added 17 points, sophomore guard Nicole Angelo (Mount Laurel, NJ/Camden Catholic) had 11 points, and Coscia delivered a season-best nine assists. Jacobs led all players with 21 points, and Heck finished with 18 points and 10 boards for Philadelphia.

The Cougars take on Felician College on Tuesday, Feb. 5 in a CACC North Division contest. Game time is set for 6:00 p.m. in Rutherford, N.J.
