Cougar Men’s Soccer Advances to CACC Semifinals with 1-0 Win Over Griffins

CALDWELL, N.J. – Freshman midfielder Sam Odell (Walton-On-Thames, England/Heathside) scored the game's only goal in the 20th minute to give the Caldwell University men's soccer team a 1-0 victory over Chestnut Hill College in the quarterfinals of the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Tournament Tuesday afternoon at Caldwell Field. With the win, the Cougars (13-5 overall) advance to the CACC semifinals for the first time since 2008 while tying the program's record for most wins in a season. The Griffins end their season at 8-10-1.

A quick throw-in taken by freshman midfielder Patrick Grey (Auckland, New Zealand/Auckland) sent Odell down the left side. He dribbled past his defender and blasted a shot into the right side of the goal for a 1-0 Caldwell lead. Chestnut Hill had a scoring chance in the 32nd minute, when a Caldwell foul was called just outside the penalty area. Juan Amaya's shot was saved by junior goalkeeper Michael Hartmann (Medford, NJ/Shawnee) to preserve the one-goal lead.

In the second half, a header by senior forward Steve Petrosino (Toms River, NJ/Toms River South) was saved off the goal line by a Griffin defender. Then in the 65th minute, a long shot by Channing Couillard ricocheted off the crossbar. Joseph Casaletto's follow-up shot went high as the Cougars maintained the lead. Chestnut Hill's final chance came on a corner kick in the last minute of play, but the Griffins were unable to connect, giving Caldwell its first home playoff win since 2007. The 13 wins ties the 2004 squad that finished 13-8-1 for the most victories in a season.

Hartmann, who was named to the all-CACC first team yesterday, made eight saves for his fourth shutout of the season. James Jackson recorded three saves for Chestnut Hill, which out-shot the Cougars, 19-9.

The Cougars will play top-seeded Philadelphia University in the CACC semifinals on Thursday, Nov. 6 at 11:00 a.m. in Waterbury, Conn. Philadelphia, the defending CACC champions, defeated Bloomfield in overtime, 2-1 this afternoon.
