Stonehill Tops Cougars in Women’s Basketball

EASTON, Mass. – The Caldwell University women's basketball team lost to host Stonehill College, 69-51 on the second day of the Stonehill Tip-off Classic Saturday afternoon at Merkert Gymnasium. The Cougars, who lost to Assumption College on a last-second basket last night, open the season 0-2. The Skyhawks, who dedicated their court to longtime athletics director Paula Sullivan before the game, are now 2-0.

Stonehill took control of the game early, eventually building a 25-9 lead midway through the first half. The bulge grew to as many as 22 points before the Skyhawks took a 47-26 lead into the halftime break. Tori Faieta scored 13 points in the first half for Stonehill, while Caldwell was led by junior forward Lisa Rovatsos (Bayonne, NJ/Bayonne) with six points.

In the second half, the Cougars were able to keep pace with Stonehill but could not cut into the lead, getting as close as 61-45 following an 8-0 run with seven minutes to play. Freshman guard Sharell Sanders (Dorchester, MA/St. Mary's) scored six points in the run for Caldwell. But the outcome was never in doubt after halftime, as the Skyhawks picked up their second win over a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference team following Friday's 69-54 victory over Dominican.

Sanders finished with a team-leading 12 points and four steals off the bench. Senior forward Emily Caswell (Wakefield, RI/Prout School) followed up yesterday's 24-point, nine-rebound performance with a double-double, netting 11 points and 11 boards to earn a spot on the all-tournament team. Faieta led all players with 27 points and 12 rebounds and was named the tournament's MVP.

Caldwell plays its first home game of the season on Thursday, Nov. 20 against the University of Bridgeport. The non-conference game begins at 7:00 p.m. in the George R. Newman Center.
