FLUSHING, N.Y. – The Caldwell University volleyball team earned a three-set victory at Queens College, 25-19, 26-24, 25-23 in a non-conference match Monday night in Queens' Auxiliary Gym. The win gives the Cougars a 17-8 record on the season, while the Knights drop to 8-13.
Caldwell opened the match by hitting .316 with 17 kills to win the first set, 25-19. Freshman outside hitter
Taryn Auyong (Honolulu, HI/Kamehameha) led the Cougars with five kills. Queens erased a 10-3 deficit in the second set to lead 24-23, only to have Caldwell score the final three points to win, 26-24. Senior setter
Athena Nestoras (Los Angeles, CA/St. Monica) notched five kills without an error and eight assists. The third set also went down to the wire, with the Cougars breaking a 22-22 tie with three of the final four points.
Nestoras registered nine of Caldwell's 15 kills in the third set en route to a match-high 16 kills. She also added 16 assists and two service aces. Auyong finished with 10 kills and 14 digs, while freshman setter
Gabrielle Bennett (San Antonio, TX/Johnson) had a career-high 30 assists. Sophomore outside hitter
Rachael DiLeonardo (West Chester, OH/Mount Notre Dame) added six kills and 11 digs, with senior libero
Jaclyn Del Cid (Bogota, NJ/Bogota) pacing the defense with 18 digs. Arielle Dicocco led Queens with 15 kills and 10 digs.
The Cougars host Post University in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference match Wednesday, Oct. 29. The first serve is at 7:00 p.m. in the George R. Newman Center.
