PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – The Caldwell College women's basketball team staved off a late comeback attempt from Chestnut Hill College to win, 65-59 in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference game Saturday afternoon at Sorgenti Arena. The victory improves the Cougars to 7-6 overall and 5-1 in the conference, while the Lady Griffins fall to 1-11, 0-6 CACC.
Caldwell led by as many as 13 points in the first half before taking a 43-32 advantage at halftime. The Cougars shot 50.0 percent from the field and held a 23-16 rebounding edge, with senior forward
Jeanette Anderson (Lynn, MA/Lynn English) scoring 14 points, and junior forward
Emily Caswell (Wakefield, RI/Prout School) and freshman guard
Antoinette Pilla (Scarsdale, NY/Ardsley) tallying 10 points apiece in the first half.
In the second half Caldwell stayed in control of the game, building a 56-42 lead with 8:12 remaining. But Chestnut Hill got back in the game with a 16-5 run to cut the deficit to three, 61-58 with 2:14 left to play. The Cougar defense tightened up down the stretch, allowing just one made free throw the rest of the way while hitting all four of Caldwell's attempts from the line to close out the win. After shooting so well in the first half, the Cougars struggled after halftime, making 6-of-30 from the field. But Caldwell limited the Lady Griffins to 30.0 percent shooting and held a 27-23 rebounding edge in the second half.
Anderson notched 18 points and 10 rebounds while making 6-of-9 from the floor for her sixth straight double-double. Pilla finished with a career-high 18 points while making three three-pointers, and Caswell registered 14 points and 12 boards. Freshman forward
Alyssa James (Rosedale, NY/St. Mary's) continued to dominate the glass with 13 rebounds to go with nine points, three steals and two blocks. Over her last four games, James is averaging 14.8 rebounds per contest. Annie Farrow paced Chestnut Hill with 20 points and 12 rebounds.
The Cougars play their third CACC road game in a row on Wednesday, Jan. 8 at Post University. The game starts at 6:00 p.m. in Waterbury, Conn.
