PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – A lay-up by junior guard Kevin Walker (Bayonne, NJ/St. Peter's Prep) with 2.6 seconds remaining in overtime lifted the Caldwell College men's basketball team to a 76-74 victory over USciences Saturday afternoon at Morgan Arena. The win is the 500th career victory for head coach Mark Corino, who becomes the third men's college basketball coach in New Jersey to win 500 games.

The Cougars (11-6 overall, 7-3 CACC) trailed by as many as 15 points in the second half before using a 23-8 run to tie the score at 62-62 with four minutes left in regulation. Sophomore guards Brian Kenny (Howell, NJ/Jackson Memorial) and Salvatore Vitello (Bridgewater, NJ/Bridgewater-Raritan) hit three-pointers, while junior forward Michael Balkovic (Neptune, NJ/St. John Vianney) scored six points in the run.

After the Devils (10-8, 6-5 CACC) went ahead by four, Walker hit a three to make the score 67-66 USciences with 41 seconds on the clock. T-John Casiello made 1-of-2 from the line, then Balkovic hit a pair of free throws to tie the score at 68-68. The Devils came up empty on their next possession, and Walker's half-court shot was off the mark, sending the game to overtime.

In the extra session, the Cougars made six free throws and led 74-72 before Sho DaSilva tied the score with a lay-up with just under two minutes left. After empty possessions by both teams, DaSilva attempted to give the Devils the lead but his lay-up was blocked by sophomore forward Terik Bridgeman (Harlem, NY/Nia Prep). With time running down, Walker drove from the left and converted a lay-up in traffic for the go-ahead points. He was fouled on the play, but his free throw attempt did not fall. The Devils threw a long pass that was deflected out of bounds with 0.4 seconds left, but a turnover on the inbounds play ended the game.

USciences led by as many as 13 points in the first half, hitting 8-of-12 from three-point range and shooting 65.4 percent from the floor in the first half to take a 43-33 advantage at the break. Five different Devils made three-pointers in the half, while Bridgeman scored 11 points for Caldwell. An 11-6 run to open the second half expanded USciences' lead to 54-39 with 13:22 left in the second half. The Cougars responded, battling back for the historic victory.

Corino joins current Richard Stockton College coach Gerry Matthews (548) and Princeton University legend Pete Carril (514) as the only men's college basketball coaches in New Jersey to win 500 games.

"I'm certainly proud to be in the company of two great coaches in Coach Carril and Coach Matthews, who is a friend of mine," Corino said. "I think more than anything this accomplishment is not about me, it's about the celebration of our institution and their commitment to our athletics department and student-athletes. It's about the players through the years that have contributed to our success. It's about my assistant coaches and all the others who have played a role in our success over the years. I don't like to look at it as a personal accomplishment but the accomplishment of the program. 500 wins is a great milestone, but more importantly it brings exposure to our program and to our institution."

Balkovic registered 23 points and 12 rebounds while making all nine of his free throws. Bridgeman finished with 17 points, nine boards, five blocks and three assists, while junior guard Wyatt Polk (Haddonfield, NJ/Haddonfield) added 13 points. Walker delivered four assists and had four steals to go with 10 points. The Devils were led by Garret Kerr with 21 points, 11 rebounds and six assists before fouling out late in the second half.

The Cougars host Nyack College on Tuesday, Jan. 28, beginning at 8:00 p.m. in the George R. Newman Center.
