Winning Streak Halted with Loss at Dominican

Box Score
ORANGEBURG, N.Y. – The Caldwell College women's basketball team saw its six-game winning streak come to an end with an 81-72 defeat to Dominican College in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference game Wednesday night in the Hennessy Center. The Cougars, who hadn't lost since a defeat to Franklin Pierce University on Dec. 13, fall to 9-7 overall and 7-2 in league play. The Lady Chargers are now 5-11, 3-6 CACC.

Caldwell held an early 15-7 lead seven minutes into the first half that was erased by an 11-0 run by Dominican. Junior guard Devin Gold (New Hope, PA/Council Rock North) answered for the Cougars with two three-pointers in an 8-0 run for a 23-18 advantage. Again the Lady Chargers came back to regain the upper hand with six straight points. Eventually Dominican was able to take a slim 37-35 edge into the locker room at halftime. The Cougars hit 7-of-13 from three-point range, including two apiece from Gold, sophomore guard Nicole Angelo (Mount Laurel, NJ/Camden Catholic) and freshman guard Antoinette Pilla (Scarsdale, NY/Ardsley).

Back-to-back threes from Nicole Welton and Jacqueline Rywalt in the first minute of the second half pushed Dominican's lead to 43-35. The Cougars were able to close the gap to five after a conventional three-point play by Angelo made the score 52-47 with 11:43 to play. But the Lady Chargers slowly pulled away, extending their lead to as many as 14 points while never letting Caldwell come closer than seven points the rest of the way. Dominican shot 58.1 percent from the field in the second half, including 5-of-7 from beyond the arc. The Lady Chargers also racked up 17 steals while scoring 34 points off 23 Caldwell turnovers in the game.

Senior forward Jeanette Anderson (Lynn, MA/Lynn English) shot 11-of-16 from the floor en route to 27 points and 15 rebounds for her ninth double-double of the season. Angelo had 13 points, while Pilla and Gold each finished with nine points. Senior guard Marielle Duryea (Middle Village, NY/Archbishop Molloy) and junior guard Jessica Coscia (Staten Island, NY/Moore Catholic) delivered six assists apiece for Caldwell. KC Jentzen led Dominican with 19 points, 17 rebounds and three steals, while Welton and Lashonda Hathorne had 18 points each.

The Cougars play another CACC road game on Saturday, Jan. 25 at USciences. Tip-off is set for 1:00 p.m. in Philadelphia, Pa.
