NYACK, N.Y. – The Caldwell College men's basketball team fell to Nyack College on the road, 84-72 in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference match-up Thursday afternoon at Bowman Gymnasium. The loss gives the Cougars a 7-5 record overall, including a 3-2 conference mark, while the Warriors improve to 4-7, 2-3 CACC.
Neither team gained a significant advantage in the first half, with five lead changes and three ties. Trailing 25-22 with 7:45 on the clock, Caldwell tallied the next nine points to lead 31-25. The run included a four-point play from sophomore guard
Dawan Lighty (Paterson, NJ/Kennedy), who was fouled while making a three-pointer. The Cougars ended up taking a 36-33 lead at the break, with junior guard
Wyatt Polk (Haddonfield, NJ/Haddonfield) scoring 10 points in the half.
Over the first five minutes of the second half, Caldwell was able to increase its lead to 45-40 following a pair of baskets by sophomore forward
Terik Bridgeman (Harlem, NY/Nia Prep). Nyack responded with seven straight points, punctuated by a three from Chris Hampton, to take a 47-45 advantage at the 13-minute mark. With the score tied at 51-51 with 10 minutes left, the Warriors took control of the game with a 14-4 spree to lead 65-66 with 6:13 remaining.
The Cougars battled to get back in the game, getting nine points from junior guard
Kevin Walker (Bayonne, NJ/St. Peter's Prep) in a 13-4 run that made it a one-point game, 71-70 with two minutes to play. But the Warriors scored the next seven points, aided by a pair of Caldwell turnovers, to put the game out of reach. Nyack made 25-of-28 (89.3 percent) from the free throw line for the game compared to 18-of-28 for Caldwell. The hosts also held a 40-31 rebounding advantage and grabbed 16 boards on the offensive glass that led to 20 second-chance points.
Bridgeman paced the Cougars with 17 points on 7-of-8 shooting from the floor and added a season-high 14 rebounds. Polk finished with 16 points, Lighty had 15 points, and Walker contributed 10 points, five assists and four steals. Hampton hit six threes to lead Nyack with 26 points, and Nick Moore added 24 points and nine rebounds.
Caldwell continues CACC play on Saturday, Jan. 4 at Chestnut Hill College. Game time is set for 3:00 p.m. in Philadelphia, Pa.
