Cougars Handle Dominican in Women’s Basketball, 77-53

CALDWELL, N.J. – The Caldwell College women's basketball team pulled away in the second half en route to a 77-53 victory over visiting Dominican College in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference game Saturday afternoon at the George R. Newman Center. The win is the sixth in a row for the Cougars, who are now 9-6 overall and 7-1 in conference play. The Lady Chargers fall to 3-10, 1-5 CACC.

Trailing by three midway through the first half, Caldwell went on an 18-2 run that included seven points from freshman guard Antoinette Pilla (Scarsdale, NY/Ardsley) to take a 28-15 lead. Dominican's KC Jentzen and Aliyah Alston scored back-to-back baskets at the end of the half to make the score 32-23 Caldwell at the break. Senior forward Jeanette Anderson (Lynn, MA/Lynn) scored 10 points for the Cougars, who held the Lady Chargers to 27.3 percent shooting from the field in the first half.

The lead was still nine, 45-36 with 11 minutes to play when a 17-7 spree allowed Caldwell to take control of the game with a 62-43 advantage at the 5:19 mark. The Cougars extended the lead to as many as 26 points, as Caldwell closed out its sixth consecutive victory. Caldwell out-rebounded Dominican 51-38 and shot 81.3 percent (26-of-32) from the free throw line compared to 7-of-10 for the Lady Chargers.

Anderson led the Cougars with 22 points, nine rebounds, five steals and a career-high four blocks. Pilla finished with 14 points, sophomore guard Nicole Angelo (Mount Laurel, NJ/Camden Catholic) scored 13 points and junior forward Emily Caswell (Wakefield, RI/Prout School) added 10 points and eight rebounds. Freshman forward Alyssa James (Rosedale, NY/St. Mary's) continued to rebound well, grabbing 15 boards for the fifth time in her last six games. She also had three blocks and three assists. Jentzen paced Dominican with 16 points and nine rebounds.

Caldwell's next game is on Jan. 22 at Dominican, starting at 5:30 p.m. in Orangeburg, N.Y.
