PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – The Caldwell College volleyball team defeated Chestnut Hill College in five sets in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference match Friday night at Sorgenti Arena. The Cougars, who won by the score of 24-26, 25-20, 25-16, 23-25, 15-12, improve to 7-7 overall and 4-0 in league play, while the Griffins drop to 3-9, 1-3 CACC.
After losing the first set, Caldwell came back strong with wins in the second and third sets for a 2-1 lead. Junior outside hitter
Athena Nestoras (Los Angeles, CA/St. Monica Catholic) had six kills and an .857 hitting percentage in the second set, while freshman outside hitter
Taylor Zaeske (S. Milwaukee, WI/S. Milwaukee) recorded five kills in the third set for the Cougars. Then in the fourth set, Caldwell led 23-21 and stood two points from winning the match. But the Griffins tallied four consecutive points to take the set and force a fifth set.
The Cougars took a 9-4 lead in the deciding set, only to have Chestnut Hill tie the score at 10-10. But three errors by the Griffins, plus a kill and a service ace from junior outside hitter
Erica Harrell (Richardson, TX/Plano East), gave Caldwell a 15-12 win and the match.
Zaeske led the Cougars with 15 kills, while Nestoras finished with 14 kills and 14 digs. Senior middle blocker
Kasey Bausch (Bellmore, NY/Holy Trinity) added 11 kills and three blocks, while Harrell had 10 kills. Senior setter
Lisa Roth (Gilbert, AZ/Williams Field) dished out 49 assists, and junior libero
Jaclyn Del Cid (Bogota, NJ/Bogota) led the defense with 21 digs. Madison McBride paced Chestnut Hill with 18 kills and 16 digs.
The Cougars host Goldey-Beacom College in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference on Saturday, Sept. 28, beginning at 1:00 p.m. in the George R. Newman Center.
