Cougars Battle Back to Beat Philadelphia in Women’s Soccer

Box Score
CALDWELL, N.J. – The Caldwell College women's soccer team scored three unanswered goals to erase an early deficit and beat Philadelphia University, 3-1 in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference game Saturday afternoon at Caldwell Field. The Cougars, who avenged a loss to the Rams in last year's CACC Tournament semifinals, are now 3-1-1 overall and 2-0-1 in league play. Philadelphia remains winless at 0-3 overall and in the CACC.

An unassisted goal by Hannah Palese in the 24th minute put the Rams on top, 1-0. The lead held until the 43rd minute. A header by sophomore midfielder Remi Piccirillo (Toms River, NJ/Toms River North) was saved by a diving Courtney Shaw. But senior defender Rebecca Stinger (Atco, NJ/Hammonton) was there to knock in the rebound and tie the game at 1-1.

In the 56th minute, the Cougars scored on an almost identical play, this time with sophomore midfielder Sarina Soriano (San Jose, CA/Archbishop Mitty) finishing the rebound off a header by senior midfielder Julie Crankshaw (Lanoka Harbor, NJ/Lacey Twp.) for a 2-1 lead. A nice play in the 75th minute resulted in Caldwell's third goal of the game. Piccirillo played a long pass to junior forward Natalie Migoya (Lincoln Park, NJ/Morris Catholic) at the top of the penalty area. Migoya laid the ball off to sophomore midfielder Kelly Folk (Jackson, NJ/Jackson Memorial), who beat Shaw for a 3-1 advantage.

Caldwell held a 26-13 advantage in shots, as Shaw made 11 saves in goal of the Rams. Junior goalkeeper Robin Franchi (Sewell, NJ/Deptford) tallied seven saves to preserve the win for the Cougars.

Caldwell hosts LIU Post in a non-conference game on Monday, Sept. 23. The game starts at 3:30 p.m. at Caldwell Field.
