PLEASANTVILLE, N.Y. – The Caldwell College volleyball team wrapped up play at the Pace University Tournament on Saturday, losing to American International College in five sets and to Florida Tech in three sets at the Goldstein Fitness Center. The results give the Cougars a 4-5 record on the season.
Against AIC, Caldwell won the first two sets by identical scores of 25-19, with junior
Athena Nestoras (Los Angeles, CA/St. Monica) and freshman
Taylor Zaeske (S. Milwaukee, WI/S. Milwaukee) tallying 11 kills apiece. But the Yellow Jackets won the next two sets, 25-22 and 25-19 to force a fifth set. AIC took control early in the final set, building a 13-5 lead en route to a 15-9 win.
Nestoras registered career highs with 21 kills and 28 digs while hitting .346 for the match. Zaeske finished with 18 kills and 12 digs, while senior setter
Lisa Roth (Gilbert, AZ/Williams Field) delivered 33 assists and 15 digs. Junior libero
Jaclyn Del Cid (Bogota, NJ/Bogota) added 27 digs. Melanie Garcia led the Yellow Jackets (4-3) with 18 kills.
In their final match of the weekend, the Cougars lost to Florida Tech, 25-18, 25-19, 26-24. After losing the first two sets, Caldwell stayed close in the third set, eventually leading 23-19. Three straight points by the Panthers made it 23-22, but a kill by Nestoras put the Cougars in position to win the set. Florida Tech came back to win, getting kills from Kim Juriga and Charlie French to go with a Caldwell attack error for a 26-24 victory. Juriga led the Panthers (6-1) with 12 kills.
Nestoras had seven kills and 14 digs, while Del Cid had 14 digs. Del Cid, who eclipsed 1,000 career digs in the match against Dowling on Friday at the Pace Tournament, was named to the All-Tournament Team.
The Cougars play their first home match of the season on Tuesday, Sept. 17 against Concordia College in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference match. The first serve is set for 7:00 p.m. in the George R. Newman Center.
