NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The Caldwell College volleyball team lost a non-conference match at Southern Connecticut State, 3-0 Tuesday night at Pelz Gymnasium. The Cougars fall to 2-2 with the defeat, while the Owls, who won by the scores of 25-19, 25-19, 25-21, improve to 3-1.
In the first set, Caldwell held a 17-16 edge following kills by freshman
Taylor Kovach (Oregon, OH/Clay) and sophomore
Kelsey Blankerts (Sylvania, OH/Southview), and an ace from freshman setter
Rachel Carpenter (Newark, OH/Newark). But the Owls answered by scoring nine of the next 11 points to win, 25-19. The Cougars led 17-15 in the second half, only to have the hosts come back again and take a 2-0 lead in the match. Lauren McVey tallied six of her match-high 16 kills in the third set to lift the Owls to the sweep.
Junior outside hitter
Athena Nestoras (Los Angeles, CA/St. Monica Catholic) led the Cougars with 11 kills and 15 digs, while freshman outside hitter
Taylor Zaeske (S. Milwaukee, WI/S. Milwaukee) contributed nine kills. Carpenter delivered 14 assists and senior setter
Lisa Roth (Gilbert, AZ/Williams Field) had 13 assists. Junior libero
Jaclyn Del Cid (Bogota, NJ/Bogota) added 13 digs.
The Cougars begin their Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference schedule on Thursday, Sept. 12 with a match at Felician College. The first serve is set for 7:00 p.m. in Rutherford, N.J.
