Cougars Overcome Slow Start to Beat Nyack in Women’s Hoops

NYACK, N.Y. – The Caldwell College women's basketball team battled back from a halftime deficit to defeat Nyack College, 65-48 in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference game Wednesday night at Bowman Gymnasium. The win is the eighth in a row for the Cougars, who improve to 12-11 overall and 10-4 in the conference. The Warriors drop to 1-20, 1-12 CACC.

Caldwell struggled early, as Nyack built a 20-15 lead with 6:38 remaining in the first half. A 9-2 run, sparked by three points from junior forward Jeanette Anderson (Lynn, MA/Lynn English), put the Cougars ahead, 24-22 with 3:14 on the clock. A pair of baskets by Courtney Peay over the final three minutes allowed the Warriors to take a 26-24 lead at the break. Nyack shot 41.4 percent from the field in the first half compared to 33.3 percent for Caldwell.

Early in the second half, the Cougars regained the lead on two baskets by Anderson and a pair of free throws from sophomore forward Emily Caswell (Wakefield, RI/Prout School) that made the score 30-28. A three-pointer by Ashley Tallman and three points from Khamari Tellis helped Nyack pull ahead, 34-32 with 12:38 to play. But the Cougars eventually put some distance between themselves and the host Warriors, using a 24-7 spree to take control of the game with a 56-41 lead at the two-minute mark. Freshman guard Nicole Angelo (Mount Laurel, NJ/Camden Catholic) had six points and Anderson added five points in the run. Nyack never came closer than 12 points, as Caldwell earned its eighth straight victory.

Caldwell's shooting improved to 41.7 percent in the second half while holding the Warriors to 24.2 percent. The Cougars also held a commanding edge at the free throw line, hitting 25 of their 32 attempts, while Nyack made just 2-of-4 from the stripe. Anderson led all players with 16 points, nine rebounds and three steals. Caswell added 10 points and five boards, while Angelo and senior guard Torey Jones (Providence, RI/LaSalle Acad.) each had nine points. Tellis and Peay led Nyack with 12 points apiece.

Caldwell continues CACC play with a home game against Chestnut Hill College on Saturday, Feb. 9. Game time is set for 1:00 p.m. in the George R. Newman Center.
