BLOOMFIELD, N.J. – Senior guard
Torey Jones (Providence, RI/LaSalle Acad.) scored 21 points to lead the Caldwell College women's basketball team to a 60-46 victory over Bloomfield College in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference game Tuesday night at the Bloomfield Gym. The win is the 12th in a row for the Cougars (16-11), who clinched at least a tie for the CACC North Division title with a 14-4 conference record.
Caldwell led by as many as eight points in the first half and never trailed in building a 24-17 lead by halftime. Jones scored 14 of Caldwell's 24 points in the half, as the Cougars held the Lady Deacons (11-14, 8-10 CACC) to 20.0 percent shooting.
A pair of baskets by Shaniqua Bacote to open the second half cut the Cougars' lead to 24-21. But Caldwell responded with a 16-6 run that included threes from Jones and sophomore forward
Emily Caswell (Wakefield, RI/Prout School) to take a 40-27 advantage with 13 minutes to play. The lead grew to as many as six points following two baskets from Caswell that made the score 53-37 with 7:23 on the clock. Bloomfield pulled to within 11 points, but Caswell hit another three and the Cougars wrapped up their 12th win since the Lady Deacons handed Caldwell an overtime loss back on Dec. 19.
The Cougars shot 56.0 percent from the floor after halftime, including 4-of-7 from three-point range, while Bloomfield went 0-of-8 from beyond the arc.
Jones shot 8-of-12 from the floor en route to 21 points and added eight rebounds, four assists and two blocks. Caswell finished with 18 points and a career-high five steals, while junior forward
Jeanette Anderson (Lynn, MA/Lynn English) had 12 points, nine boards and four steals. Bacote led Bloomfield with 10 points.
The Cougars remain in first place in the CACC North, a half-game ahead of second-place Dominican College, who completed its conference schedule with a 14-5 record. A win at Concordia College on Saturday would give Caldwell the North Division crown outright for the first time since the league went to divisions in 2007-08.
Caldwell concludes the regular season with a CACC contest at Concordia College on Saturday, Feb. 23. Game time is set for 1:00 p.m. in Bronxville, N.Y.
