CALDWELL, N.J. – The Caldwell College women's basketball team lost a non-conference game to visiting Franklin Pierce University, 89-68 Friday evening at the George R. Newman Center. The Cougars, who were led by senior forward
Jeanette Anderson (Lynn, MA/Lynn) with 19 points and 15 rebounds, drop to 3-6 overall, while the Ravens improve to 5-6.
Franklin Pierce jumped out to a 15-3 lead and stayed in control for most of the first half. After a conventional three-point play by Brooke Coderre gave the Ravens their largest lead, 43-29 with 2:13 left in the half, Caldwell answered with a basket from Anderson and two threes from sophomore guard
Nicole Angelo (Mount Laurel, NJ/Camden Catholic) to make the halftime score 43-37 Ravens. Franklin Pierce shot 63.0 percent from the field and 5-of-6 from three-point range, led by Coderre with14 points on 5-of-5 shooting from the floor.
The Ravens continued their hot shooting from long range in the second half, as Dyamond Gardner and Brittany Martelle each hit two treys in an 18-6 run that stretched the lead to 61-43 with 14:09 to play. The Cougars fought back to cut the deficit to 11, 76-65 with 5:18 remaining, but the Ravens closed out the game on a 13-3 run. Franklin Pierce ended up shooting 64.8 percent from the field for the game, including 9-of-12 from beyond the arc. Caldwell made 34.9 percent of its field goal attempts and hit just 16-of-30 from the line.
Anderson notched the 40th double-double of her career, shooting 6-of-10 from the floor and swiping four steals. Angelo finished with 13 points, while junior guard
Morgan Thompson (Neptune, NJ/Neptune) tallied a career-high 11 points. Martelle led all players with 28 points, with Gardner adding 17 points, 11 boards and five steals for the Ravens.
Caldwell returns to Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference play on Wednesday, Dec. 18 with a home game against Concordia College. Tip-off is set for 6:00 p.m. in the Newman Center.
