Box Score
NEWARK, Del. – Senior midfielder
Carissa Strye (Nazareth, PA/Nazareth) scored the game's only goal to lift the Caldwell College women's soccer team to a 1-0 victory over Philadelphia in the semifinals of the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Tournament Thursday afternoon at Wilmington University. The win puts the Cougars (12-5-2) into the CACC championship game for the first time in the program's 16-year history.
The game remained scoreless into the second half, when junior midfielder
Ashlee Paknis (Little Egg Harbor, NJ/Pinelands Reg.) was fouled about 25 yards straight out from the Rams' goal. Strye's left-footed shot spun off the goalkeeper's hands and into the goal for a 1-0 Caldwell lead. The Cougar defense held strong the rest of the game, turning away any scoring chances Philadelphia was able to generate. Junior goalkeeper
Robin Franchi (Sewell, NJ/Deptford) was outstanding, recording four saves for her sixth shutout of the season and second of the tournament. Courtney Shaw had three saves for the Rams (7-10-3).
The game marked the fourth time Caldwell and Philadelphia have met in the tournament and the first time the Cougars came out on top. The win avenged last year's 2-1 loss to the Rams in the CACC semifinals.
Caldwell will meet top-seeded Holy Family University in the championship game on Saturday, Nov. 9 at 1:30 p.m. at the Wilmington University Athletic Complex in Newark, Del.
