Cougar Volleyball Tops Bloomfield in Three Sets

CALDWELL, N.J. – The Caldwell College volleyball team swept Bloomfield College, 25-13, 25-18, 25-17 in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference match Wednesday night in the George R. Newman Center. The Cougars improve to 17-11 overall and 14-4 in league play with the win, while the Lady Deacons drop to 5-22, 5-13 CACC.

Caldwell cruised in the first set, getting three kills from freshman middle blocker Taylor Kovach (Oregon, OH/Clay) and holding Bloomfield to three kills and a -.192 hitting percentage. In the second set, the Lady Deacons built a 16-10 lead before being outscored by the Cougars, 15-2 the rest of the way. Kovach had three of her five kills during that run, and closed out the set with three consecutive service aces.

The third set was tied at 11-11 when Caldwell used kills by freshman outside hitter Taylor Zaeske (S. Milwaukee, WI/S. Milwaukee), junior outside hitter Athena Nestoras (Los Angeles, CA/St. Monica) and sophomore defensive specialist Susan Harrell (Richardson, TX/Plano East) to build a 17-12 lead en route to the 25-17 victory. Nestoras had four kills in the set to lead Caldwell.

Kovach finished with a team-best 10 kills to go with four blocks and five aces. Nestoras had eight kills, while senior middle blocker Kasey Bausch (Bellmore, NY/Holy Trinity) hit .538 with seven kills and no errors in 13 attempts. Freshman setter Rachel Carpenter (Newark, OH/Newark) notched 33 assists, including 14 in the second set, and junior libero Jaclyn Del Cid (Bogota, NJ/Bogota) recorded 19 digs. Jacquelyn Madlock and Juliette Monroy each had five kills for Bloomfield.

The Cougars close out the regular season with a home game against the University of the Sciences on Saturday, Nov. 9. Caldwell can clinch the CACC North Division with a victory. Game time is set for 1:00 p.m. in the Newman Center.
