BRIDGEPORT, Conn. – The Caldwell College women's basketball team earned a non-conference victory on the road, beating the University of Bridgeport, 79-68 Saturday afternoon at Hubbell Gym. The win gives the Cougars a 2-3 record on the season, while the Purple Knights fall to 2-3.
Bridgeport led early in the first half by as many as seven points, with Caldwell eventually taking the lead with three minutes left in the half on a three-pointer by sophomore guard
Nicole Angelo (Mount Laurel, NJ/Camden Catholic). That basket started a 7-2 run to close out the half, giving the Cougars a 33-29 lead at the break. Angelo and senior forward
Jeanette Anderson (Lynn, MA/Lynn English) each scored nine points in the half, with Anderson grabbing nine rebounds.
The Purple Knights opened the second half with a pair of Vanessa Schindler baskets to tie the score at 33-33. Caldwell answered with a 16-5 run, capped by a conventional three-point play from Anderson, to take a 49-38 advantage with 13:29 to play. Bridgeport was able to come within four, 61-57 with six minutes on the clock. But the Cougars went to the free throw line 20 times down the stretch, making 16 to pull away for the win.
Caldwell shot 84.8 percent (28-of-33) from the charity stripe in the second half and made 38-of-45 for the game compared to 7-of-13 for Bridgeport. The Cougars also were efficient from the field in the second half, shooting 50.0 percent.
Anderson led Caldwell with 18 points, 14 rebounds and three blocks. Junior forward
Emily Caswell (Wakefield, RI/Prout School) registered 15 points, eight boards and seven assists, while Angelo added 15 points. Freshman forward
Alyssa James (Rosedale, NY/St. Mary's) tallied her first career double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds. Schindler had 14 points to pace Bridgeport.
Caldwell returns to Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference play on Monday, Nov. 25 with a game against Bloomfield College. Tip-off is set for 6:00 p.m. in the George R. Newman Center.
