Cougars Battle Back to Beat Felician in OT, 78-64

CALDWELL, N.J. – Trailing by nine points late in the second half, the Caldwell College women's basketball team came back to defeat Felician College, 78-64 in overtime in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference game Wednesday night at the George R. Newman Center. The Cougars (1-3) earn their first win of the season while starting the conference schedule 1-0. The Golden Falcons fall to 1-4 overall, 1-1 CACC.

A pair of free throws by Trina Plummer put Felician on top, 54-45 with 3:36 left in the second half. A basket from senior forward Jeanette Anderson (Lynn, MA/Lynn) and a three-pointer by junior guard Devin Gold (New Hope, PA/Council Rock North) made the score 54-50 with 2:22 to play. Junior guard Jessica Coscia (Staten Island, NY/Moore Catholic) followed a basket from Keisha Jean-Louis with a three to cut the deficit to three, 56-53 with 1:15 on the clock. Felician came up empty on the next possession, and junior forward Emily Caswell (Wakefield, RI/Prout School) scored to make it a one-point game with 41 seconds remaining.

Another missed shot by the Golden Falcons put the ball in Caldwell's hands with time running down. Coscia found Anderson under the basket, and Anderson's lay-up with 6.8 seconds remaining put the Cougars on top, 57-56. After a time-out, Jac'Quel Saunders drove the length of the floor and was fouled with 1.8 seconds left. She missed her first free throw but made the second to send the game to overtime.

The extra session belonged to Caldwell, which used a 14-2 run over the first three minutes to take control of the game en route to the victory. Caswell scored eight points in the run, while freshman forward Alyssa James (Rosedale, NY/St. Mary's) had four points. The Cougars made all three of their field goal attempts in overtime while going to the foul line 19 times, making 15 (78.9 percent).

The first half was close, with a three-pointer by sophomore guard Nicole Angelo (Mount Laurel, NJ/Camden Catholic) as time expired giving the Cougars a 28-27 edge at halftime. Caldwell built the lead up to 37-33 before Felician scored 12 consecutive points, including six from Jean-Louis, for a 45-37 advantage with just over seven minutes to play. But the Cougars came back to defeat Felician for the 18th time in the last 19 meetings.

Angelo made three three-pointers en route to a career-best 19 points to go with three steals. Caswell and Anderson scored 18 points apiece, with Caswell grabbing 14 rebounds and Anderson tallying 10 boards in the win. James finished with 11 rebounds, while Coscia delivered eight assists to go with nine points. Trina Plummer, who scored her 1,000th career point during the first half, led Felician with 34 points.

Caldwell plays a non-conference game at the University of Bridgeport on Saturday, Nov. 23, beginning at 1:00 p.m. in Bridgeport, Conn.
