ORANGEBURG, N.Y. – Five players scored in double figures for the Caldwell College men's basketball team to lead the Cougars to an 82-75 victory over Queens College Saturday evening at Dominican College's Daniel Sullivan Tip-Off Tournament. The Cougars are now 2-1 on the season, while the Knights drop to 0-4.
Queens held a 19-16 lead nine minutes into the game before baskets by sophomore forward
Terik Bridgeman (Harlem, NY/Nia Prep) and junior guard
Wyatt Polk (Haddonfield, NJ/Haddonfield), and a three from sophomore guard
Brian Kenny (Howell, NJ/Jackson Memorial) put Caldwell on top, 23-19. A conventional three-point play by Polk started an 18-8 run over the final six minutes of the first half, as the Cougars took a 43-32 lead into the break. Caldwell shot 64.0 percent from the floor in the first period, with Bridgeman scoring 12 points on 5-of-7 shooting.
In the second half, the Cougars maintained control of the game, pushing the lead to as many as 17 points, 67-50 with 8:42 to play. But the Knights battled to get back in the game, getting 10 points from Patrick Parker in a 23-9 run that made the score 76-73 Caldwell with 1:09 on the clock. After junior forward
Michael Balkovic (Neptune, NJ/St. John Vianney) and George Holmes exchanged baskets, Polk hit two free throws and Holmes missed a three-pointer. Junior guard
Kevin Walker (Bayonne, NJ/St. Peter's Prep) closed out the win with a pair of free throws in the game's final seconds.
Polk and Bridgeman led the Cougars with 18 points each, as Polk grabbed a team-high 10 rebounds and had three steals. Balkovic finished with 15 points and six boards, Walker had 12 points, five assists and two steals, and sophomore guard
Dawan Lighty (Paterson, NJ/Kennedy) added 11 points. Parker led all players with 19 points and seven assists, while Amir Tarif had 13 points and 10 boards for Queens.
The Cougars take on NYIT on the second day of the Daniel Sullivan Tip-Off Classic on Sunday, Nov. 17, beginning at 2:00 p.m. in Orangeburg, N.Y.
