SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – The Caldwell College women's soccer team saw its season come to an end with a 1-0 loss to No. 19 University of Bridgeport in the first round of the NCAA Division II East Region Tournament Friday at American International College. The Cougars finish with a 13-6-2 record, while the Purple Knights (18-2) advance to play AIC in the second round on Sunday, Nov. 17.
After a scoreless first half, the game's only goal was scored in the 63rd minute. Flo Gamby played the ball to the left for Tabea Rauschenberger, who dribbled in and beat junior goalkeeper
Robin Franchi (Sewell, NJ/Deptford) to her right for a 1-0 lead. Junior forward
Natalie Migoya (Lincoln Park, NJ/Morris Catholic) had a couple excellent scoring chances breaking down the right in both the fourth and 62nd minutes, but Bridgeport goalkeeper Julia Hansson made the save both times. Another chance came in the 57th minute, when sophomore midfielder
Sarina Soriano (San Jose, CA/Archbishop Mitty) hit a shot that was heading for the left post. Again Hansson came up big, diving to her right to make the save.
The Cougars and Knights both put seven shots on goal, with Franchi making six saves and Hansson stopping all seven for the shutout. Franchi also snuffed out multiple Bridgeport chances, including an open shot by Amanda Moura in the 36th minute.
The Cougars, coached by
Nate Guagliardi, were making their first appearance in the 16-year history of the program after winning the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Tournament last week. The loss marked the final game for Caldwell seniors
Julie Crankshaw (Lanoka Harbor, NJ/Lacey Twp.),
Rebecca Nadeau (Little Egg Harbor, NJ/Pinelands Reg.),
Rebecca Stinger (Atco, NJ/Hammonton) and
Carissa Strye (Nazareth, PA/Nazareth). The seniors won 45 games in their career, the most victories in any four-year period in the team's history.
Bridgeport, seeded third, plays second-seeded AIC on Sunday at 1:00 p.m. at Abrow Field.
