Cougar Men’s Basketball Edged by Felician, 69-67

Box Score RUTHERFORD, N.J. – The Caldwell College men's basketball team fell to Felician College on the road, 69-67 in a close Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference contest Wednesday evening at Job Gymnasium. The Cougars have lost their past four games to drop to 5-11 overall and 1-6 in league play, while the Golden Falcons improve to 5-9, 3-4 CACC.

A basket by freshman guard Dawan Lighty (Paterson, NJ/Kennedy) put Caldwell ahead, 66-65 with 1:22 remaining. Felician answered with a lay-up from Antoine Obery, then added a free throw by Anthony Obery following a Cougar missed shot to lead 68-66 with 24 seconds on the clock. On Caldwell's next possession, sophomore guard Kevin Walker (Bayonne, NJ/St. Peter's Prep) was fouled with 19 seconds left. He made the first free throw but missed the second, and Felician's J.R. Pringley went 1-of-2 from the line for a 69-67 lead.

At the other end, Caldwell got the ball in to sophomore forward Michael Balkovic (Neptune, NJ/St. John Vianney), who drew a foul and went to the line looking to tie the score. But he missed the first free throw, then missed the second intentionally. The Cougars ended up with possession after the second miss, giving them one more chance. Sophomore guard Wyatt Polk (Haddonfield, NJ/Haddonfield) drove to the basket, but his lay-up attempt was blocked by Jamal Reid as time expired.

Felician started fast, jumping out to an 18-5 lead over the first six minutes of the game. The hosts still led by eight, 28-20 when the Cougars reeled off a 14-5 run over the final eight minutes of the half to take a 34-33 advantage at the break. Lighty hit three of Caldwell's five threes in the half en route to 11 points, as the Cougars shot 50.0 percent from the field.

Caldwell maintained the upper hand for most of the second half, with Lighty recording back-to-back dunks followed by a three for the Cougars' biggest lead of the game, 56-48 with nine minutes to play. The Golden Falcons responded with a 13-4 run capped by a three from Pringley to regain the lead, 61-60 at the 3:44 mark. The lead went back and forth five times until Anthony Obery's free throw in the final minute put Felician on top to stay. Caldwell ended up shooting 47.1 percent from the field, including 6-of-12 from beyond the arc, but made just 13-of-24 (54.2 percent) from the free throw line.

Lighty hit 4-of-6 from three-point range and scored a career-best 22 points. Walker registered 13 points and five assists, and Balkovic scored 10 points, all in the second half, to go with nine rebounds. Antoine Obery led Felician with 14 points, 11 rebounds and five assists, as the hosts grabbed 18 offensive rebounds to record a 46-32 advantage on the glass.

Caldwell continues conference action with a home game against Post University on Saturday, Jan. 12, beginning at 3:00 p.m. in the George R. Newman Center.
