CALDWELL, N.J. - The Caldwell College men's basketball team dropped a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference game to Dominican College, 83-68 Tuesday evening in the George R. Newman Center. The Cougars fall to 6-14 overall and 2-9 in the conference with the loss, while the Chargers improve to 17-3, 11-1 CACC.
Dominican broke open a close game and grabbed a 30-23 lead with 5:20 left in the first half. The Cougars answered by reeling off a 16-7 spree over the final minutes of the half to take a 39-37 lead at the break. Freshman forward
Billy McDonald (North Haven, CT/North Haven) scored eight points in the run, including a three-pointer and a conventional three-point play. Freshman guard
Dawan Lighty (Paterson, NJ/Kennedy) led Caldwell with 11 points in the half, while Khaleev Ginyard had 12 for the Chargers.
Dominican took control early in the second half with a 13-2 run over the first five minutes to lead 50-41. The bulge grew to as many as 17, following a three-pointer by A.J. Burton that made the score 67-50 with 8:27 remaining. Caldwell never came closer than 12 points the rest of the way, shooting just 23.8 percent from the field in the second half compared to 64.3 percent for the Chargers. The Cougars held a huge advantage at the free throw line, shooting 27-of-33 compared to 8-of-14, but the Chargers hit 9-of-19 from beyond the arc, with Caldwell making 3-of-16.
Four Cougars scored in double figures, led by sophomore forward
Michael Balkovic (Neptune, NJ/St. John Vianney) with 19 points and 16 rebounds. Lighty finished with 14 points, while sophomore guard
Kevin Walker (Bayonne, NJ/St. Peter's Prep) and McDonald scored 11 points each. McDonald made all four of his field goal attempts and hit both of his free throws to set a career high for points. Ginyard led Dominican with 17 points, and Cory Quimby added 11 points and 10 rebounds.
Caldwell hosts the University of the Sciences on Saturday, Feb. 2, beginning at 3:00 p.m. in the Newman Center.
