CALDWELL, N.J. - The Caldwell College men's basketball team lost to Philadelphia University, 84-61 in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference game Saturday afternoon in the Gallagher Center. The Cougars are now 6-13 on the season, including a 2-8 mark in the conference, while the Rams improve to 12-6, 7-2 CACC.
Trailing 17-11, the Cougars used a three-pointer by sophomore guard
Wyatt Polk (Haddonfield, NJ/Haddonfield) and baskets from senior forward
Kairo Rochford (Brooklyn, NY/James Madison) and freshman guard
Brian Kenny (Howell, NJ/Jackson Memorial) to take an 18-17 lead midway through the first half. Philadelphia responded with an 18-5 run to regain the upper hand, 35-23 with four minutes remaining in the half. With the assistance of a three from junior guard
Cameron Badger (Trenton, NJ/Living Faith Christian), Caldwell was able to cut the deficit to 39-30 at the break. The Cougars shot 36.4 percent from the field in the first half compared to 51.9 percent for the Rams.
Momentum stayed with the hosts, as Philadelphia opened the second half with a 19-6 spree to increase its lead to 58-36 at the 13-minute mark. The Cougars never came closer than 19 points the rest of the way. The Rams shot 60.0 percent from the field after halftime, including 6-of-12 from three-point range, to earn the victory.
Sophomore guard
Kevin Walker (Bayonne, NJ/St. Peter's Prep) led Caldwell with 15 points, and sophomore forward
Michael Balkovic (Neptune, NJ/St. John Vianney) added 14 points and seven rebounds. Badger came off the bench to dish out a career-high six assists, while freshman forward
Billy McDonald (North Haven, CT/North Haven) scored a career-best nine points. TJ Huggins paced the Rams with 21 points.
Caldwell hosts Dominican College in a CACC battle on Tuesday, Jan. 29. Game time is scheduled for 8:00 p.m. in the George R. Newman Center.
