CALDWELL, N.J. - The Caldwell College men's basketball team earned a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference victory over Nyack College, 78-64 Wednesday evening in the George R. Newman Center. With the win, the Cougars end a five-game losing skid and improve to 6-12 overall and 2-7 in the conference. The Warriors are now 3-14, 1-9 CACC.
Caldwell took control of the game early with a 15-2 run that put the hosts ahead, 29-12 with 6:47 on the clock. Freshman guard
Dawan Lighty (Paterson, NJ/Kennedy) and sophomore guard
Kevin Walker (Bayonne, NJ/St. Peter's Prep) hit three-pointers to spark the run. The lead grew to as many as 24 points before the Cougars took a 42-21 advantage at the half. Caldwell shot 51.6 percent from the field compared to 29.4 percent for Nyack in the first half.
But the Warriors pushed back, draining five threes over the first three minutes and 21 seconds of the second half to spark a 25-10 spree that made the score 52-46 Caldwell at the 13-minute mark. The Cougars maintained the upper hand and put the game away with eight straight points during a three-minute stretch that made the score 75-60 with under a minute to play. Caldwell dominated the glass, 38-22 and outscored Nyack in the paint, 42-24 for the game.
Sophomore guard
Wyatt Polk (Haddonfield, NJ/Haddonfield) turned in a solid all-around performance with 22 points, 10 assists and seven rebounds. Walker finished with 21 points, five boards, four assists and three steals, while freshman guard
Brian Kenny (Howell, NJ/Jackson Memorial) had 10 points. Sophomore forward
Michael Balkovic (Neptune, NJ/St. John Vianney) grabbed a team-high eight rebounds to go with nine points. Chris Hampton paced the Warriors with 21 points, while Khalid Samuels contributed 20 points and six assists.
The Cougars return to action on Saturday, Jan. 26 with a CACC game at Philadelphia University. Tip-off is at 4:00 p.m. in Philadelphia, Pa.
