CALDWELL, N.J. – Junior midfielder Rebecca Stinger (Atco, NJ/Hammonton) scored the go-ahead goal in the 86th minute to give the Caldwell College women's soccer team a 4-3 victory over Holy Family University in the first Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference game Saturday at Caldwell Field. The win evens the Cougars' record at 2-2, while the Tigers, who eliminated Caldwell from the CACC Tournament last season, falls to 0-3.
With the score knotted at 3-3 and time running out in regulation, senior defender Sarah Royse (Northvale, NJ/Old Tappan) sent a long ball towards sophomore forward Natalie Migoya (Lincoln Park, NJ/Morris Catholic), who headed the ball on to Stinger. Stinger raced in behind the defense and put the ball past Holy Family goalkeeper Rachel Dunkle for the eventual game-winner.
The goal was the final tally in a game that saw both teams find the net with frequency. Sophomore midfielder Ashley Paknis (Little Egg Harbor, NJ/Pinelands Reg.) started the scoring when she knocked in a rebound off a shot from junior forward Julie Crankshaw (Lanoka Harbor, NJ/Lacey Twp.) in the 14th minute. Migoya made it 2-0 in the 15th minute, when she headed home a long throw-in from freshman midfielder Ashley King (Little Egg Harbor, NJ/Pinelands Reg.). Holy Family answered in the 35th and 49th minutes with goals by Jenna Richards and Erin Blaney to tie the score at 2-2.
Less than two minutes later, Migoya notched her second goal of the game off an assist from Paknis to put the Cougars ahead. But the lead did not last long, as Bree'an Blaney scored 55 seconds later to tie the game again. Caldwell began taking control of the game, maintaining possession and creating scoring chances over the next 20 minutes. Sophomore Lauren Iuliucci (Franklinville, NJ/Delsea) hit a rocket from nearly 30 yards out that caromed off the cross bar in the 79th minute. Stinger eventually made the hard work pay off with the final goal of the game.
The Cougars are back in action on Tuesday, Sept. 11 with a non-conference home game against St. Thomas Aquinas College. Game time is set for 4:00 p.m. at Caldwell Field.
